Railroad

Aboard the Alaska Railroad, you'll travel off the roads and into Alaska's untamed wilderness. Whether you head north to Denali or Hurricane Turn or south to Whittier or Seward, you're in for a spectacular scenic treat.

Northbound Highlights

Mt. McKinley. The railroad offers several unique views of "The Great One" rising 20,320 feet into the heavens. You'll travel through its foothills and over rivers fed by its glaciers.

Hurricane Gulch. Travel over a 701-foot steel bridge with a 295-foot drop to the river below. This section is both an engineering feat and a scenic wonder.

Tundra & Wildlife. You'll travel through forest and then into vast tundra landscapes alive with eagles, moose, bears, caribou, and beavers.

Southbound Highlights

Turnagain Arm. You'll ride along a fjord where 4,000-foot peaks rise from the sea, glaciers hang from the hillsides, and eagles soar above the sights.

Kenai Mountains. The railroad winds through a glacier-carved wilderness, into vistas accessible only by rail.

Wildlife & Bird Viewing. Watch for Dall sheep, moose, bears, eagles and myriad bird species. You may even spot a pod of Beluga whales along the coastline.

Riding the Rails in Comfort

Choose between the total comfort of an Alaska Railroad car or the absolute luxury aboard a privately operated tour company car. Both offer unobstructed views and full meal service. Private cars go a step further with upholstered seats, plush carpeting, brass and wood accents and dining salons replete with fine linen, imported china, French stemware and gourmet food. Day trips from Anchorage or overnight packages are available.
